'^ '! /'', '...^ - ,' A PROVISIONAL INVEI^TORY ;! '-' ''' :.<:''BY'' 'EDWARb' R. REILLY \' f .t _ i"!.* .' ''. - !', %' if' ' '. -r 1975 INTRODUCTION ' - . .:- . .'. ' .' ' ' 31ore than twenty years have passed since, through the efforts of the late Hodgson, the library and papers;of the. eminent Viennese music historian Guido Adler (l8%-19l)l) were brought to the University of Georgia. It is regretable that a complex set of circumstances has delayed for so many years the publication of an adequate record, of the materials, in. this collection. In the past decade, however, real, though painfully.slpw_ progress has been made in remedying this situation.. The present work is designed to speed this pro cess by making available to interested: scholars a provisional truide to the contents of Adler's papers. VJhile much of the. basic work needed to establish an accurate inventory has been completed^ a number of matters require further . - *. .-" Y investigation and clarification. Before undertaking a final revision of the work already done, sources in Vienna should,be consulted, and certain details of the material in Georgia.rechecked.; In the meantime the inventory in its present form can stjll serve the, majority of functions for which it was de signed, by offering a clear view.of the range of materials available for study within the papers, and by specifying the location of individual documents. The personal library of Guido Adler was acquired from his son Hubert -. _ Joachim Adler in 1951 by Hugh Hodgsohifor the Department of Husic which he had founded, and at that time headed./ To be precise,'Hodgson acquired that portion of the library which could be 'recovered. After Guide Adler's death in Vienna inl9bl, and that of his daughter Melanie in Theresienstadt the following year, the historian's collection.was confiscated.and dispersed among several Austrian libraries. That portion of,.the library recovered by his son after World War II, and subsebuently purchased by Hodgson, sdLth the aid of ii funds from an Atlanta foundation, consists of approximately 1200 titles. Al though the collection contains some unusual ^orks, most notably a group of early Beethoven editions and early manuscript copies of three compositions by Mozart!s student F. X. Sussmayr, it is,essentially a,personal working library of standard volumes published between c. 18?5 and c. 1930. As such it pro vided the University /rith a solid core of bibliographic works, historical ' - ' - * ' . - / ; - collections and studies, and periodicals at a time when many of these volumes were still very difficult to obtain. In spite of determined efforts to pre serve the library as an integral unit, lack of funds for the adequate preser vation of the collection ultimately forced the Department to acquiesce in its division. The books and periodicals..were catalogued among other ^orks on music in the General Library. The music remained in the Department's Music Reference Room. To establish a precise and permanent record of ;the entire library, my student Miss Mary Cail Means enthusiastically undertook "A Catalogue of Printed ^. . ,. .*'.--' * ,.-... Books and Music in the Guidö' Adler Collection" as part of her work toward a Master of Arts degree. In this work, completed in; 1968,'Miss Means also! pro vided a valuable summary of the circumstances surrounding the acquisition of the library, and a discussion of how the collection reflected Adler's varied activities. /j..., -„, j'*'- ' . .',-'. ... ' '*--.. Adler's papers were acquired by the Department of Music in 19$2 as an adjunct to his library. That they are of,greater intrinsic interest and value ' . ' ',"''< '' - .;-' ^ ) ' ' . .'-./.-..- '. -<...'*.-'. than the library itself has become increasingly clear with the passing years. Although it is certain that Adler had himself put his papers in order in his later years^ few traces of the original arrangement had survived in 1962 when I first became acquainted with the collection. In subsequent years the papers - ' ... ' /''.*.*. ' - were transferred, for more effective safe-keeping, to the Special Collections ill division of the General Library. There I slowly examined what at first seemed a chaotic mass of documents, and reorganized them in a pattern which retained as many features as I could reconstruct of their original arrangement. The fullest possible preservation'of the'original contexts of the documents became a working principle. Thus, although it would have been simpler and more con venient to establish ra*r single alphabetic file of correspondence, a number a groups of letters were clearly connected with specific events or projects, ^ ' .' - '^' . .i. . '. ' '*'"**" and some aspects of their meaning wculd have been lost if they had been separated alon? simple alphabetic lines. The resulting division of materials is as a result open to the charge of. being unnecessarily cumbersome. 1 have tried to remedy this situation by-including in the second part of the inventory ... - , . -^. . /',. .' - . --. -.r . . . . cross references to all other special sets of letters in a single alphabetic ' . . ' ..'''.'. '',. ' '^. ': .': : ". ' . . ,-.'. listing of correspondents. Thus the general file of correspondence and related .''.'.'..'. '!";'.' ^. j". ' ' . ; ' materials (Part 11 A of the inventory) serves as a comprehensive index of all of the letters in the collection.' Gther^divisiohs of the papers pose fewer problems, but I have again tried to Indicate relationships between the more important groups of documents through cross references. With the completion of the.reorganization of the papers, the collection as a whole filled 7h boxes. 'The outline on the following pages provides an * * overview and general key to the various divisions of the materials, and may serve as a table of contents for the 'entire body of papers. iv The Papers of Guido Adler: Pattern of Organization 1. PART II / CORRESPONDENCE AND REIA TED MATERIALS - . ..'.-* -i.-*. * . '.''..'-' The following division of the inventory contains a listing not only of those correspondence files 'that physically constitute this portion of the whole body of the papers of Guido Adler, but also of letters found in all other sections of the collection. As noted in my general introduction, an underlying principle in the arrangement of the papers has been to preserve, the contexts of the various documents as fully as possible. Thus many letters connected with specific activities represented elsewhere in the collection have been kept in the folders associated with these activities-, rather 'than transferred, to the general corre spondence files. The most substantial^, although by no means the only, special folders scattered throughout the papers are about a dozen in number. They are connected with the periodic anniversaries that marked Adler's.career; his participation in two major musical societies; his work in organizing the, Haydn and Beethoven centennial festivals; and his editorship of the two editions cf -' the Handbuch der Musikgeschichte. To facilitate reference to these files, and to save space, the following abbreviations are used. .. BZ - Beethoven Zentenarfeier (1927)/ (Boxes It CM, Prague - Congratulatory messages on the occasion of Adler 's appointment to a professorship at the German University in Prague (138$) (Box 37). ,,,-" . IMG - Internationale Musikalische! Gesellschaft (International Musical Society) (ca. 1903-1^), (Box 23). :. , All other special files are identified by name in separate listings. Individuals and organizations represented in the general correspondence section by separate folders are 'indicated by asterisks following their names. Names not so marked are represented only by letters *in the particular files cited. 3 A t In identifying the character of the material found for each person or group, the following conventional abbreviations are used. ALS - autograph letter, signed* AL - autograph letter. LS - letter, signed. So-called Briefkarten'("letter cards") are classified as letters. . * -." '' "<'. ANS - autograph notecard, signed..(variants as above). APS - autograph postcard, signed (variants as above). CC - calling card (a large number of which have brief messages written on them). -- J. : .. n.di.- no date indicated. . .-. ; : ,., '.,'-; . / n.p. - noplace indicated.; , -; . '.- . . TLS - typescript letter, signed (variants as in ALS above). IPS - typescript postcard, signed (variants as above). ? v.p. - various places indicated.in several different .letters. . Full dates for letters are given,^ where possible, when the files contain* only one or two items. Larger numbers of docmnents are given inclusive dates. When a ccnsiderable number of places are.represented in any single group of letters, only the most important are identified. For the material in related files, such as those listed above, only the type of document is normally indicated, since the occasion and the general time period are usually clear. To aid those who may use this'inventory in identifying, or in obtaining information about, the people represented by correspondence, abbreviations indicating one of a number of standard dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other reference works have been given in brackets following the dates of the indi vidual person. Although a relatively large'number of persons have been iden tified, no references have been found, in published norks for many others. Names of individuals are presented as fully as possible on the basis of the available material. In some cases, however, only a surname can be provided, and in others a nickname or diminutive serves as a given, name. Without additional evidence,' it seemed best to reproduce such names exactly.as they appear in the documents. The reference works c ited are identified with the, abbreviations given below. For German readers it may be useful to note that many of the persons cited in B$ are also found in R12. As successive volumes of CBL appear, it should be possible to identify a larger number of figures in the latter part of the alphabetic series^ Death dates for a few:individuals who are clearly no longer alive have thus far remained elusive. - -',' . y. . ' ^ While the primary function of this portion of the inventory is to serve as a guide to the location of all of the correspondence in the collection, a few references have been included to individuals not represented by letters, in order to draw attention to the existence of important materials of other types else where in the collection. Similarly, cross references are included for material in the CLIPPINGS AND OFFPRINT section that might bear on Adler's relationships with persons represented by correspondence. ;,In this regard ä check of the thesis of Miss Gail Means cited in the general introduction to this volume will reveal additional material among Adler's books and music. The present central section of the inventory may thus be used as an index of ,the contemporaries of Adler who are represented in any significant way in the papers as a whole. At present, with the exception of the material.on Gustav Mahler, all of the correspondence among Adler's papers,remains.unpublished. The letters of Mahler have been reproduced in an article of mine cited in the entry for the composer, -.' iü 'lr? and preliminary nork has been done for the publication of several other groups of letters, notably those of Schönberg. It is my hope that this inventory will encourage exploration and study of the many other substantial bodies of corre spondence found in the papers. Although a collection.such as this inevitably contains much that is routine and perfunctory, much remains that illuminates the feelings and attitudes of a wide variety of individuals, and the material in this section as a whole throws light on many sides of musical life in Austria and Europe during the period in;which,Adler was active. h? ADLER, GUIDO (1855-19hl) and BETTI *(nee BERCER:' 1859-1933) [NDB]^ The present folder contains only a few miscellaneous documents connected with Adler and his wife. Adler's correspohdence, in so far as it has been preserved among his papers, is found.in the files connected with its recipients. In his earlier years Adler frequently drafted his replies on the, letters he received, and occasionally on separate scraps of paper. In later years much of his correspondence was typed,.and carbons were usually kept. Important documents connected, with Adler's life appear throughout the entire body of the papers, but special attention should be directed to the clippings on his various activities in Section III B (Boxes 53-5?); to the records of his academic career (Box 60); and to the family records and documents (Box 65). The collection of congratulatory messages on the occasion of AdLer's 70th birthday, folder 2 (Box 37), also contains a group of newspaper clippings which review the historian's activities up to that time. A list of the various members of Adler's family whom it has been possible to identify is included in the present folder. Those who could be provided with full names are represented with individual entries in this inventory.
