The early part of the collection relates to Dr. Ambrose Baber (1792 Buckingham County, Virinia - 1846 Bibb County, Georgia ) physician and early resident of Macon, and his wife, Mary Eliza Sweet (1810 Bryan County, Georgia - ) , daughter of George Dunbar and Rachel Ross Porcher Sweet of Savannah. Dr. Baber was involved with the William Hunter-David Mitchell duel in 1802, Savannah ; as a mason, he gave the welcome to Macon speech when General LaFayette visited in 1825 and he served briefly (1842-44) as Charge'd Affaires to Sardinia and state senator in Georgia. From the Sardinia period, there are letters from John MacPherson Berrien, a letter of introduction signed by Daniel Webster, a passport, social invitations. A number of his speeches are present in the collecion. He was part of a group of men who established the Episcopal girl's school, Montpelier Institute in Monroe County, which existed under this name ca. 1840- 55. Daughter Lucy Marion attended the school and there are many letters between Marion and Mary Baber which show interests and concerns of the period. A son, George Frances Burleigh Baber (1833-1854/5) attended the United States Navy School at Annapolis, 1850-2. He kept an official ship's log during his service on the John Adams. the Germantown and the Dale. His correspondence during this period was descriptive of life as the ships traveled to various locations. His last letters from China state that he was being transferred to the Brig Porpoise. Nothing was ever heard from the ship or crew after it left China. Family friend, John Mclntosh Kell [later executive officer on the Confederate ship Alabama] offered information and assistance. Following Dr. Baber's untimely and controversial death, daughter Marion Baber Blackshear (1836-1894) , along with her husband , mother and children, take over the correspondence and the bulk lies in this period. She was the wife of Joseph William Blackshear (1833-1906), son of Jospeh & Elizabeth C. Paul Blackshear, and their children were Ella, Paul, Birdie and Mary (Minnie), all of whom added Baber-Blackshear to their names. J. W., just prior to his marriage, served with the Jackson Artillery at Camp Ft. Brown on St. Simons Island, Georgia (1861) and wrote of his experiences. During their married life, work often kept J. W. away from his home, but there is frequent correspondence between hushand, wife, children and other Blackshear siblings - Henry W., J. Emmett and Lizzie B. Thompson. J. W. often signs letters to his wife xold blessed1. Marion's frequent correspondents in addition to the family, are Callie and Sophie Sosnowski of Athens, counsin Fannie Atkinson, also of Athens, and Valina Berrien Burroughs. Confederate correspondence was principally from George Dunbar Sweet Smith, nephew of Mary Baber. He wrote from several locations including Ft. Screven, Isle of Hope, S. C. , Camp Morgan, Ft. Jackson on James Island, S. C. and Chaff in's Farm, VA. He died at Farmville, VA in 1865. Birdie and Minnie Blackshear, dance and drama teachers, continued the correspondence following their mother's death. Correspondents include their father, cousin George Atkinson and Charles Blackshear from Java. There is a lot of dance related material - articles, programs, newsclips, account books. The girls lived in the ancestral house on Walnut Street in Macon. The materials were originally organized chronologically and that same order was basically maintained although a better finding aid was prepared. There are separate sections for letters from John MacPherson Berrien and Burleigh Baber. Notations as to the location of particular letters are at the end of the inventory. Lee Barfield and written while he was a Confederate soldier in the Civil War. The letters were all written to his wife Maggie in Henderson, Georgia during the time period July 26, 1862 - December 22, 1864. Many of the letters are in poor condition, but a typescript is included of the legible letters. As he moved through North Carolina and Virginia, Barfield described such topics as a prison camp; the health of himself and others; the execution of a deserter; Negro troops; the supplies of food, horses, and arms; his company's skirmishes; and other war news. He continued to be optimistic that the war would soon be over. Also in the collection are various legal documents, deeds, promissory notes, accounts, and receipts for the years 1822-1842. Many of these are from the area of Bibb county, Georgia, and the name of Tillmon Barnett is often mentioned. The Southern Side, a book about Andersonville prison, is included. From a later time period are a 1918 Macon News newspaper, a 1921 Athens Banner newspaper, and a 1929 letter to Mrs. M. B. Medlock of Macon. Arranged by subject Craig Barrow (1876-1945), chief surgeon of the Central of Georgia Railway married Elfrida DeRenne (1884-1970) in 1906. She was a descendent of Noble Jones, owner of Wormsloe Plantation in Savannah, GA. The Barrows lived at the residence on Wormsloe Plantation, but also owned a summer home in Hendersonville, North Carolina called Yonholme. Elfrida DeRenne Barrow was the author of several books about the history of Savannah. The collection consists of correspondence, genealogical information, writings, financial papers, printed material, scrapbooks, photographs, deeds, and transcripts and copies of historical documents. Much of the Craig Barrow correspondence deals with his involvement with the Savannah Boxing Commission, Savannah Golf Club, Central of Georgia Railway, and the University of Georgia Alumni Society. The family correspondence contains several folders of letters regarding the Barrow property called the Home Place in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. There is much emphasis on Savannah, Wormsloe, and Georgia history in both printed material and photographs. A large section of the financial papers concerns the real estate owned by the Barrows in Savannah and details the sale, rental, and management of the properties. GAGP The University of Georgia Libraries Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library Manuscripts Section WILLIAM TAFLEY "TAP" BEITOETT, SR. PAPERS Register MS. #2086 Compiled by: Jim M. Veal February, 1987 ' UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA LIBRARIES HARGRETT RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY MANUSCRIPTS SECTION William Tapley "Tap" Bennett, Sr. (1891-1982) was a leader in the suc cessful effort to modernize and diversify Georgia farming. A 1913 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture, Bennett made a career of practical- innovation. As a county extension agent in Spalding County and associate of the Central of Georgia Railway, he started Georgia's first k-H club, first ^-H camp, and helped ex pand poultry production. His greatest contribution was in the area of livestock production, where he helped free the region from the cotton economy by promoting and facilitating cattle farming. He loaned bulls to new stock breeders, introduced parasite control methods, began the seeding of permanent pastures, helped operate dairies, and put on Georgia first cattle shows in Macon, Albany, and Savannah. President Roosevelt, having heard of Bennett's work, hired him to run his model farm at Warm Springs. Bennett moved on to a post as supervisor of the Pine Mountain Valley project, a New Deal Community based on diversified farming. Here he established the state's first assembly-line poultry processing plant. In 19^, Bennett returned to Central of Georgia as Director of Agricultural Development. He retired not long after suffering a stroke in 1959* but continued to work as Livestock Director of the Southeastern Fair. In addition to many other honors, Bennett was Pro gressive Farmer Magazine's Man of the Year in 1955> and elected to the College of Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1977- His son, William Tapley Bennett, Jr., was U.S. Ambassador to NATO. Most of the correspondence in this collection is limited to "get well" greetings and responses to invitations to a testimonial dinner. The collection contains only a few examples of Bennett's writing. There are, however, many photographs and newspaper clippings, chronicling Bennett's high level of involvement in modern agriculture in Georgia.
