David Lewis Earnest photographic collection, 1900-1950 Photo descriptions by file number

David Lewis Earnest, noted Athens educator and photographer, was born in Greenville, TN on November 25, 1862.† From 1897 until 1932 he was associated with the State Normal School in Athens, Georgia where he served in such capacities as instructor, acting president, dean, dormitory manager, and bookkeeper.† When the Normal School merged with the University of Georgia in 1932 he was made associate professor of education and continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1941.† After his retirement he continued his association with the University where he served as visual aids coordinator for the Demonstration School.† Besides being an avid photographer, he was also one of the first bicyclists in Athens.† Earnest died in Athens on January 4, 1956.

These three collections include over 300 photographs and over 300 slides that Earnest took of mainly Athens and the surrounding area from the early 1900ís to the early 1950ís.† Included are images of Athens streets, buildings, and houses, as well as buildings on the University of Georgia and State Normal School campuses.† There are also photographs of African Americans, log houses, and other places in Georgia, including Martha Berry School (Rome), Tallulah Falls, Milledgeville, and the plantation at Smithonia (Oglethorpe County).† There are also a few photographs of areas in Tennessee, including Greenville, Lookout Mountain, and the Nolichucky River.

These collections provide a good glimpse of Athens and environs during the first half of the 20th century.
